Breaking the chains of academic publishing

February 10, 2019

Why are we paying (up to 6 000 €) to publish? Why are we paying also to access to publications? Starting this year, Open Science (Open Access and Plan S) will revolutionize our publishing system and may also change the evaluation system of researchers.

Join us this Thursday at 4pm to meet international experts and debate on new policies related to Open Access and Plan S!

Programme of the event:

16:00-16:15: Introduction by the AJC06 and Eurodoc

16:15-16:30: Open Science by University of Cote d’Azur

16:30-16:50pm: Introduction by Jason Schmitt, director of the documentary film "Paywall: the Business of Scholarship"

16:50-18:00pm: Screening of the film

18:00-18:20pm: Plan S by Marc Schiltz, President of Science Europe

18:20-19:30pm: Round table and debate

19:30-20:30pm: Dinner Cocktail and networking

Jason Schmitt, director of “Paywall: The Business of Scholarship”, will join us to present his documentary and debate on open access. His movie focuses on the need for open access to research and science, questions the rationale behind the $25.2 billion a year that flows into for-profit academic publishers, examines the 35-40% profit margin associated with the top academic publisher Elsevier and looks at how that profit margin is often greater than some of the most profitable tech companies like Apple, Facebook and Google.

Marc Schiltz, president of Science Europe, will join us to present and debate on plan S (10 principles, here in attached): an initiative for Open Access publishing that was launched in September 2018. The plan is supported by cOAlition S, an international consortium of research funders, including ANR. Plan S requires that, from 2020, scientific publications that result from research funded by public grants must be published in compliant Open Access journals or platforms.
